This has been on of the most challenging and incredible summers of my life. When I took the job at camp Menzies I thought I would be babysitting girls and having some summer fun, but the position turned out to be one of mentoring, sisterhood, and education.
Menzies is a Girl Scout outdoor experience overnight camp that teaches girls and young women about themselves, about their environment (built and natural), and presents them with new experiences and challenges that require teamwork, cooperation, leadership, and creativity. Camp Menzies is located near Camp Connell, Ca in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and is part of the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California organization. Camp activities include archery, horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, writing, painting, cooking and meal planning, creating camp movies and newsletters, performing skits, interacting with/exploring nature, wilderness survival and first aid, fire safety, science (including STEM activities), and much more. The camp environment allows girls to explore their world and test their own limits under the watchful eyes of trained camp staff. They even gain cultural knowledge and experiences as they meet staff members from around the world (the 2016 staff had members from Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America as well as women from around the United States).
As a former scout of 10 years myself, I can assure you that scouting transforms girls into confident, kind, courageous, and curious young women. My own life was so influenced by my time in Girl Scouts and going to camp as a kid was the best adventure.
