Eliminating the Bystander Effect
Film and Project
In a Social Justice Film class in 2016, I co-wrote and acted in an informational video on sexualized violence. This project required intense research and meetings with the Humboldt State University Title IX board, the Rape Crisis Response Team, and the student-run CheckIt campus assault prevention program.
The project continued to evolve through a Women and Development class, an Environmental Justice class, and an Environmental Communication class in later semesters, and the film is now one part of a multi-layered website resource.
In addition to the film, the website describes the potential dangers associated with college life, the inadiquate protection currently offered by universities and police departments, the global context of women's reproductive and bodily rights, ways to educate yourself to prevent harm of yourself and others, and resources for victims.
Here is an excerpt from the "Eliminating the Bystander Effect" website:
"This site is intended to educate and inform its audience about their individual power and ability to safely intervene in dangerous situations.
- support for victims and allies
- prevention of future harm"
In case you or someone you know needs help, here is the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline - 800.656.HOPE (4673)
